As the most compact living unit, hotel rooms have always been a favorite playground for top designers. Within a limited space, they encapsulate a wealth of residential wisdom and refined taste. Today, I\u2019d like to share one of the most memorable hotel rooms I\u2019ve stayed in\u2014Aman Tokyo\u2014and explore the beauty of home-like comfort while traveling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This particular room, designed by the late architectural master Kerry Hill<\/strong>, reflects his signature style of modern minimalism. Apart from the necessary partition walls in the bathroom, the space has no extra walls\u2014zones are defined through furniture placement<\/strong> und subtle floor level changes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A narrow, elongated wet area runs along the entry hallway, separated from the main bedroom space on the right by four shoji (washi paper sliding doors)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These sliding doors offer a variety of configurations\u2014fully closed, partially open, or fully open\u2014providing both functional flexibility<\/strong> und visual dynamism<\/strong> to the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bathroom is finished with black granite from Hebei, China<\/strong>, paired with warm sen wood<\/strong>, creating a harmonious contrast that evokes a deep sense of retreat and relaxation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just three core elements\u2014wood grain<\/strong>, dark gray granite<\/strong>, und soft white washi paper<\/strong>\u2014define the room\u2019s refined palette and serene atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bathroom floor is sunken<\/strong>, with step lighting offering safety and ambiance. A side towel rack doubles as a handrail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The solid granite bathtub<\/strong>, heavy with a sense of history, contrasts beautifully with the light, frameless glass partition<\/strong>, creating a resort-like escape in the heart of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sleeping area is centered around the bed, with a symmetrical layout<\/strong> on both sides that feels clean and balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A writing desk placed between the bed and entrance forms a natural furniture screen<\/strong>, creating a gentle transition and forming a looped circulation path around the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal storage is concentrated near the entryway, with closets on both sides<\/strong> and an open luggage platform<\/strong> in the center. The bed\u2019s backdrop is wrapped in large wood panels, with symmetrical bedside lanterns<\/strong> adding a touch of ceremony to the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small step differentiates the sofa and bed areas<\/strong>, maintaining clear sightlines from the bed while creating a private and cozy lounge zone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the thoughtful height differences among the furnishings, you can enjoy the view outside even from the desk<\/strong> at the far end of the room\u2014nothing blocks your line of sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essential modern appliances like the TV and minibar<\/strong> are hidden within a cabinet<\/strong> at the foot of the bed. The TV screen rises from the unit when needed, ensuring nothing interferes with the view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the cabinet lies the sunken sofa lounge area<\/strong>, defined by furniture layout to create a private and intimate space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The window ledge<\/strong> runs alongside the bathroom and connects visually through a traditional \u201cyukimi shoji\u201d<\/strong> (sliding snow-view window). This element echoes the stone bathtub<\/strong>, enhancing the immersive bathhouse-like experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entire guestroom design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese homes<\/strong>. Kerry Hill masterfully incorporates classic elements like closets, washi partitions, and yukimi shoji<\/strong>, blending heritage materials<\/strong> mit modern spatial clarity<\/strong>. The result is a timeless space that makes you forget the outside world\u2014a true urban sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
