Painted in his final years in Toledo between 1610 and 1614, Laoco\u00f6n<\/i> is a rare and extraordinary masterpiece by El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos)<\/b>\u2014notable as his only known surviving painting depicting a classical mythological theme.<\/p>\n

The artwork illustrates the famous tragic tale from Virgil\u2019s Aeneid<\/i> during the Trojan War. The Trojan priest Laoco\u00f6n and his sons are attacked by giant sea serpents sent by divine powers after Laoco\u00f6n warned his countrymen against accepting the Wooden Horse. In a uniquely personal twist, El Greco set this ancient legend against a dramatic, stormy background of his beloved adopted city of Toledo, Spain, standing in for Troy.
