Painted during his prime Toledo period in the late 16th century, Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata ist eines von El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) most famous and powerful devotional compositions.

The painting captures Saint Francis of Assisi in a moment of intense ecstasy as he receives the stigmata—the divine marks corresponding to Christ’s wounds during the Crucifixion. Dressed in a simple Franciscan habit, Francis extends his open hands toward the heavenly light breaking through dark, swirling clouds. Set against a skull symbolizing human mortality (memento mori), El Greco’s characteristic Manierist style shines through elongated figures, cool silvery lighting, and emotional spiritual depth.
