Painted in 1911 during Kazimir Malevich’s transformative Moscow period, Gardener (Садовник) represents one of the most celebrated examples of Russian Fauvism and Neo-Primitivism. Housed in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the composition depicts a stylized, robust figure simplified into monumental geometric volumes, framed by intense color contrasts and thick black contours. Blending French Fauvist color intensity, Cézanne’s structural forms, and traditional Russian folk art motifs (lubok), Malevich elevates an everyday laborer into an iconic figure, directly laying the foundation for his future Cubo-Futurist and Suprematist innovations.
