Executed between 1763 and 1768, Mares and Foals in a River Landscape is one of the crowning achievements of George Stubbs’ famous Mares and Foals series. Commissioned by aristocratic patrons of the British turf, Stubbs bypassed traditional sporting portraiture in favor of a serene, naturalistic depiction of thoroughbred mares resting with their foals along a winding riverbank under soft oak trees. Housed in Tate Britain in London, this masterpiece combines revolutionary anatomical accuracy with a peaceful, idyllic atmosphere that prefigures British Romantic landscape art.
