Painted around 1600 by El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), this posthumous masterwork depicts Diego de Covarrubias y Leiva (1512–1577), one of the most distinguished Spanish jurists, theologians, and bishops of the 16th century, who played a key role at the Council of Trent.

El Greco based the portrait on an earlier drawing by Alonso Sánchez Coello, infusing it with his own signature Maniériste intensity. The composition focuses on the sitter’s dignified demeanor, framed by a crisp white ruffled collar (ruff) and highlighted by subtle light play across his expressive features and pectoral cross. The artwork captures both historical importance and profound psychological depth.
