Commissioned for the Chapel of San Jos\u00e9 in Toledo between 1597 and 1599, Saint Martin and the Beggar<\/i> est l'un des El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos)<\/b> most famous and elegant narrative compositions.<\/p>\n

The painting illustrates the legendary fourth-century act of charity: Martin, a young Christian officer in the Roman army, cuts his green cloak in half with his sword to share it with a shivering beggar. El Greco presents the saint atop a magnificent white horse, set against a low horizon featuring his signature stormy sky and a distant view of Toledo, including the Tagus River and the Alc\u00e1zar.
