Executed between 1760 and 1762, Mares and Foals in a Wooded Landscape is one of the earliest and most celebrated compositions in George Stubbs’ iconic Mares and Foals series. Commissioned by prominent aristocratic patrons of the British turf, Stubbs revolutionized equestrian art by placing thoroughbred mares and their young offspring in quiet, unharnessed freedom under ancient oak trees. By merging scientific anatomical observation with a peaceful, idyllic pastoral atmosphere, Stubbs captured the innate beauty and maternal gentleness of the horse, setting a benchmark for British Romantic landscape and animal art.
