Bring Italian Baroque Drama and Classical Mastery to Your Space
Transform your interior, private gallery, or art collection with a museum-quality, 100% hand-painted oil painting reproduction of Guido Reni’s monumental masterpiece, Massacre of the Innocents (1611). Painstakingly recreated layer-by-layer by senior artists at our Dafen Oil Painting Village Studio, this canvas reproduction captures the intense emotional force, classical geometry, and luminous palette of the original work housed in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna.
About the Artwork & Historical Significance
Painted in 1611 upon Reni’s return to Bologna from Rome, Massacre of the Innocents stands as one of the definitive triumphs of 17th-century Italian Baroque art. The painting depicts the dramatic biblical narrative from the Gospel of Matthew, in which King Herod orders the execution of young male infants in Bethlehem.
Rather than presenting chaos, Reni organizes chaotic violence into a remarkably harmonious, triangular composition. By combining the raw emotional charge of Caravaggio with the noble idealization and compositional balance of Raphael, Reni creates a poignant contrast between terror and classical beauty. The tragic expressions of the mothers, the dynamic movement of the executioners, and the serene pair of angels descending from heaven with palms of martyrdom make this piece an absolute landmark of European fine art.
