The Assumption of the Virgin (1577–1579) by El Greco – Hand-Painted Oil Painting Reproduction | Dafen Village Canvas Art

Commissioned in 1577 for the high altar of the Church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, Spain, The Assumption of the Virgin (La Asunción de la Virgen) was El Greco’s (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) first major masterpiece after arriving in Spain (now proudly housed in the Art Institute of Chicago).

The monumental composition is divided into two dramatic realms:

• The Earthly Realm (Lower Portion): The astonished Apostles gather around Mary’s empty tomb, their expressive gestures and dynamic drapery echoing Venetian colorist traditions.

• The Heavenly Realm (Upper Portion): The Virgin Mary ascends gracefully on a crescent moon, carried upward by a halo of angelic beings and golden divine light into the heavens.

This masterpiece marks the defining turning point of El Greco’s career, blending Italian Mannerist elegance with intense Counter-Reformation spirituality.
