Painted in 1829 and housed in the Tate Collection, High Life is one of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer’s most famous anthropomorphic canine portraits. Created as a direct companion piece to Low Life (which features a rugged butcher’s bulldog), High Life depicts a noble Scottish Deerhound sitting poised and vigilant beside an aristocratic armchair, surrounded by symbols of luxury—a carved desk, velvet drapery, polished leather-bound books, and a feather quill. Landseer brilliantly uses animal portraiture to comment on human social class, contrasting aristocratic restraint and elegance with common vitality.
