Painted in 1922, The Cardiff Team (L’Équipe de Cardiff) represents one of Delaunay’s most celebratory explorations of modern life, sport, and technological optimism. Inspired by a international rugby match between France and the Welsh team from Cardiff, Delaunay captures a high-leaping player suspended in mid-air amidst colorful advertisement signs, a giant Ferris wheel, and the soaring structure of the Eiffel Tower. Through simultaneous contrast, bold typography, and rhythmic color arcs, Delaunay bridges fine art and modern popular culture, making this one of the seminal sports-themed masterpieces of early 20th-century avant-garde art.
