Painted in 1913 during Gris’s influential period of work in Ceret, France, Guitar on a Chair (Guitare sur une chaise) is a commanding example of Synthetic Cubism. In this vertical composition, Gris integrates a musical instrument into the domestic setting of a chair, breaking down form into sweeping diagonal planes, architectural angles, and subtle woodgrain patterns. Rather than fully fragmenting the objects, Gris orchestrates a harmonious balance between abstract geometry and recognizable forms, lit by dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. Recreating this artwork requires expert-level line control and smooth gradient glazing to preserve the structural clarity and luminous depth of the 1913 original.
