Painted in 1840, The Butterfly Hunter (Der Schmetterlingsjäger) is one of Carl Spitzweg’s most humorous and whimsical Biedermeier genre scenes. The painting depicts an eccentric, middle-aged amateur naturalist wearing a blue coat and holding two butterfly nets, standing in awe amidst a towering, dense jungle. In front of him flutter two extraordinarily large blue butterflies. Spitzweg gently pokes fun at the 19th-century passion for scientific collection and hobbyist enthusiasm, placing the urban scholar in an overwhelming natural environment he is delightfully ill-equipped to conquer.
Studio Craftsmanship & Quality Highlights
-
100% Hand-Painted Execution: Built up layer by layer and brushstroke by brushstroke by senior painters at Dafen Village Oil Painting Studio—never a digital print, canvas transfer, or giclée overlay.
-
Archival Materials: Rendered using fine oil pigments on heavy-duty, archival linen canvas to ensure rich color depth, subtle tonal gradients, and long-term preservation.
-
Mastery of Jungle Foliage & Light: Special attention is given to replicating Spitzweg’s rich green canopy textures and the soft, dappled sunlight breaking through the tropical forest floor.
-
Custom Sizing Available: Produced in its classic cabinet proportions ($31 \times 25\text{ cm}$) as well as custom scaled dimensions upon request.
