Painted in 1628 and currently housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) in New York, Pieter Claesz’s Still Life. Skull and Writing Quill is one of the quintessential examples of Dutch Vanitas painting. Claesz employs a monochromatic, muted palette to invite meditation on mortality, wisdom, and the passage of time. The weathered skull, extinguished oil lamp, writing quill, and leather-bound books serve as visual metaphors for the transience of human knowledge and material existence, rendered with breathtaking tonal mastery.
