Painted in 1627 and permanently preserved in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, Pieter Claesz’s Still life with a burning candle is an iconic study of light, mood, and quiet contemplation. Renowned for pioneering the monochromatic “breakfast piece” (ontbijtje) and vanitas traditions, Claesz here centers the composition around a single burning candle casting a soft, warm glow over surrounding objects—an oil lamp, tobacco pipe, glass rummer, and books. The contrast between dramatic shadows and gentle candlelight invites reflection on warmth, knowledge, and the passage of time.
