Painted in 1642 during the height of Dutch Golden Age still life painting, Still Life with a Ham represents Pieter Claesz’s expert mastery of the banketje (banquet still life). Centered around a succulently carved ham set upon a pewter dish, the composition carefully arranges rustic bread, a mustard pot, a lemon peel, and a green studded roemer glass against a subtle, atmospheric background. Claesz harmonizes warm savory tones with cool glass and silver reflections, celebrating sensory richness and quiet domestic elegance.
