Boy Blowing an Ember (1570–1572) by El Greco – Hand-Painted Oil Painting Reproduction | Dafen Village Canvas Art

Painted between 1570 and 1572 during El Greco’s transformative stay in Rome, Boy Blowing an Ember (famously known in Spanish as El Soplón) is one of the most celebrated genre paintings from the artist’s Italian Period.

Inspired by classical Roman literature describing lost ancient paintings of flame-lit subjects, El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) depicts a young boy blowing on a glowing charcoal ember to ignite a thread or candle. The single, low internal light source illuminates his puffed cheeks, focused eyes, and heavy garments against a dark background. This pioneering study in dramatic chiaroscuro and light reflection predates and directly influences later Baroque nocturnal compositions.
