Commissioned for the Chapel of San José in Toledo between 1597 and 1599, Saint Martin and the Beggar is one of El Greco’s (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) most famous and elegant narrative compositions.
The painting illustrates the legendary fourth-century act of charity: Martin, a young Christian officer in the Roman army, cuts his green cloak in half with his sword to share it with a shivering beggar. El Greco presents the saint atop a magnificent white horse, set against a low horizon featuring his signature stormy sky and a distant view of Toledo, including the Tagus River and the Alcázar. Executed in his mature Mannerist style, the artwork displays elongated figures, brilliant metallic light reflections, and deep spiritual nobility.
