Nativity (c.1447) by Petrus Christus – Hand-Painted Oil Painting Reproduction | Dafen Village Canvas Art

Created around 1447 by Early Netherlandish master Petrus Christus—the celebrated successor to Jan van Eyck in Bruges—Nativity (De Geboorte van Christus) is one of the most famous masterpieces housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

The painting ($130 \times 97\text{ cm}$) uses an innovative trompe-l’œil stone archway decorated with relief figures representing scenes from the Book of Genesis to frame the sacred scene. Through this illusionistic portal, the viewer witnesses the newborn infant Jesus lying upon the ground, surrounded by the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, four worshipping angels, and distant shepherds in a lush, detailed Netherlandish countryside.
