Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697–1768), universally known as Canaletto, was the preeminent Italian painter of the Veduta (topographical city views) genre during the Rococo period. He achieved international acclaim for his astonishingly precise depictions of Venice’s Grand Canal, St. Mark’s Square, and the historic landscapes of England.
