Painted around 1570 during El Greco’s stay in Venice and Rome, Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple (also known as The Cleansing of the Temple) is one of El Greco’s (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) early masterpieces.
The painting captures the vivid Biblical event from the New Testament, where Jesus expels the merchants and money changers from the sacred temple. Showcasing the profound influence of Venetian masters Titian and Tintoretto alongside emerging Mannerist elements, the composition combines dramatic contrapposto poses, rich jewel tones, expressive gestures, and classical Italian architectural framing.
