Commissioned by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1848 for his Shakespeare room, Scene From A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titania and Bottom is Sir Edwin Henry Landseer’s sole major literary work and a masterpiece of Victorian fantasy art. Depicting Act IV, Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, the painting captures the spellbound Fairy Queen Titania lovingly caressing Nick Bottom, whose head has been magically transformed into that of a donkey by Puck. Surrounding the couple in an enchanted moonlit woodland are delicate fairies, attendant sprites, and a family of pristine white rabbits. Landseer brilliantly fuses his world-renowned animal naturalism with magical Victorian fairy painting traditions, achieving a striking contrast between Bottom’s rustic donkey features and Titania’s ethereal beauty.
