Napoléon Alexandre Berthier (1810–1887), 2nd Prince de Wagram, was the son of Louis-Alexandre Berthier, Napoleon Bonaparte’s legendary chief of staff and Marshal of the Empire. In 1837, Winterhalter moved to Paris, where he was quickly patronized by the French nobility and King Louis-Philippe. This portrait depicts the young Prince with his eldest daughter, Malcy Louise Caroline Frédérique (1832–1884), who would later marry the Prince Joachim Murat. Adhering to refined Neoclassical principles with touches of Romantic warmth, Winterhalter contrasts the Prince’s structured dark attire and noble bearing with the soft, luminous innocence of young Malcy in her white dress, creating a masterclass in intimate aristocratic portraiture.
