Grand Duchess Sophie Guillemette of Baden (1801–1865), born Princess Sophie of Sweden, was the daughter of King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden and wife of Grand Duke Leopold of Baden. Executed in 1831 when Winterhalter was just twenty-six years old, this portrait launched his burgeoning reputation as Europe’s foremost painter of royalty. Winterhalter presents the Grand Duchess with youthful grace and aristocratic poise. Adhering to early Neo-Rococo sensibilities, the composition balances soft, atmospheric lighting against exquisitely rendered textures—contrasting the sheen of fine silk and intricate lace embroidery with glowing skin tones and polished jewelry.
