À propos de l'œuvre et de son importance historique
Achevé en 1616 for the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà dei Mendicanti in Bologna, The Mendicantini Pietà is one of the most celebrated altarpieces of the Italian Baroque period.
The composition is divided into two dramatic vertical tiers:
-
The Upper Tier: Depicts the tragic Pietà—the Virgin Mary weeping over the lifeless body of Jesus Christ, attended by angels with profound reverence.
-
The Lower Tier: Features the patron saints of Bologna—Saint Petronius, Saint Francis, Saint Dominic, Saint Proculus, and Saint Charles Borromeo—gazing upward in devotion and interceding for the city.
Guido Reni blends the emotional depth of Caravaggesque chiaroscuro with the luminous color harmony and classicized balance of the Bolognese School. The vertical rhythm, noble figures, and poignant devotional atmosphere make this altarpiece a defining landmark of 17th-century European sacred art.
