Painted in 1919 during a dramatic turning point in Central European history, Autoportrait (Önarckép) offers an intimate glance into László Moholy-Nagy’s early psychological and artistic exploration. Before becoming a pillar of the German Bauhaus and American Constructivism, Moholy-Nagy was deeply influenced by Hungarian Expressionism and the Activist movement. In this compelling work, he uses bold brushstrokes, emotive shadow work, and intense facial focus to explore themes of inner turmoil, artistic identity, and creative rebirth following World War I.
