Zhao Xiaoyong, male, was born in Shaoyang, Hunan in 1972. The second brother in the family likes to draw since he was a child, and Zhao Xiaoyong often watches it. In October 1987, Zhao Xiaoyong, who graduated from junior high school, came to Shenzhen to work. His first job was coloring resin figures in a rattan basket factory, and later he went to work in a ceramic handicraft factory in Longgang. At the end of 1996, he went to Dafen Village in Shenzhen. Under the guidance of Zhang Zhengjing, Zhao Xiaoyong began to paint Van Gogh’s paintings, and was able to get more orders.
Yu Haibo and Yu Tianqi, their father and daughter, used the camera to record the stories of the painters in Dafen Village. A documentary titled “China Van Gogh” premiered at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival (ADFA) in November 2016. The film tells the story of Zhao Xiaoyong and Zhou Yongjiu, farmers in Dafen Oil Painting Village in Shenzhen, the largest oil painting reproduction factory in the world. The change of the times and the trip to Europe forced them to make multiple choices in the face of reality, self-confidence, morality, artistic pursuit, etc.
