Painted in 1899, The Velodrome reflects Paul Signac’s fascination with the energy of modern turn-of-the-century sports and leisure. Depicting a cycling track bathed in warm, luminous sunlight, Signac applied his mature Neo-Impressionist color theory, using distinct strokes of contrasting pure pigments to convey motion, speed, and spatial depth. The composition captures the excitement of early competitive cycling, harmonizing industrial modernity with the atmospheric beauty of optical divisionism.
