Sierra Lake exemplifies Edgar Alwin Payne’s lifelong devotion to capturing the untouched wilderness of California’s Sierra Nevada range en plein air. Known as the “Godfather of High Sierra Painting,” Payne frequently embarked on summer pack trips deep into the backcountry to study the light and structural geology of alpine heights. In this tranquil composition, Payne contrasts the still, glassy mirror of an alpine lake with dramatic, light-bathed granite cliffs. His expressive palette knife technique, combined with a luminous palette of cool cobalt blues, emerald reflections, and sunlit ochres, captures both the physical mass and quiet majesty of nature.
