Lake In The High Sierra represents Edgar Alwin Payne at the height of his powers as the quintessential painter of the American West. Famed for embarking on long summer pack trips deep into the Sierra Nevada, Payne painted en plein air to capture the shifting atmospheric light and raw geological forms of untouched wilderness. In this composition, he frames a glacial lake against towering, light-swept granite cliffs. His expressive palette knife application, dynamic impasto, and harmonious palette of cool cobalt blues, emerald water reflections, and warm sunlit rock faces bring the rugged beauty of high altitudes to life.
