Painted between 1600 and 1607 during his mature period in Toledo, Agony in the Garden (also known as Christ in Gethsemane) is one of El Greco’s (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) most celebrated sacred compositions.
The artwork depicts the poignant Biblical scene from the Gospels prior to Christ’s arrest. Surrounded by swirling, dreamlike clouds, Jesus kneels in deep prayer while an ethereal angel holding the chalice of suffering appears before him. Below, the sleeping apostles Peter, James, and John are curled inside a glowing bubble-like fold of drapery, while Judas Iscariot and approaching soldiers lurk in the moonlit distance. El Greco’s late Mannerist style reaches its peak here through intense supernatural illumination, fluid organic shapes, and vivid color contrasts.
