Edwin Henry Landseer – Jocko with a Hedgehog (1828) Romanticism Animal Art – Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction by Dafen Village Studio

Painted in 1828 during the height of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer’s early career, Jocko with a Hedgehog highlights the artist’s keen observational humor and unmatched talent for capturing animal personalities. The work depicts “Jocko,” an alert and inquisitive terrier, cautiously inspects a defensively curled hedgehog on a earthy floor. Landseer masterfully contrasts the dog’s tense, inquisitive posture and bristling coat with the impenetrable spiky defense of the hedgehog, showcasing the playful friction between domestic instinct and wild self-preservation that captivated Victorian audiences.
