François Boucher – Rinaldo and Armida (1734) Rococo Literary Art – Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction by Dafen Village Studio

Submitted in 1734 as his reception piece (morceau de réception) to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris, François Boucher’s Rinaldo and Armida marks a milestone moment in French Rococo art history. Inspired by Torquato Tasso’s epic poem Jerusalem Delivered (La Gerusalemme liberata), the painting captures the magical moment when the sorceress Armida falls in love with the Christian knight Rinaldo instead of slaying him. Surrounded by playful cupids, elaborate classical architecture, and enchanting nature, Boucher showcases his supreme command over dramatic narrative, soft pastel coloration, and fluid composition.
