Painted around 1871 near his family’s estate in Yerres shortly after the Franco-Prussian War, Yerres, Soldiers in the Woods (Militaires dans un bois) reflects Gustave Caillebotte’s early fascination with natural light and outdoor subjects. The composition depicts uniformed soldiers relaxing in a quiet, sun-dappled forest clearing. Caillebotte blends delicate brushwork with subtle tonal contrasts, capturing the peaceful interplay between figure and landscape that characterized early French Impressionism.
