Nativity (1452) by Petrus Christus – Hand-Painted Oil Painting Reproduction | Dafen Village Canvas Art

Painted in 1452 by Early Netherlandish master Petrus Christus—the primary successor to Jan van Eyck in Bruges—Nativity (De Geboorte van Christus) is one of the prized gems housed in the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, Belgium.

Framed by a magnificent sculpted archway adorned with Old Testament relief figures, the composition leads the viewer’s eye into a quiet, sacred courtyard. The Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph kneel in humble adoration before the newborn Christ child, who rests upon a radiant beam on the earth, accompanied by worshipping angels and distant shepherds set against a rolling Flemish countryside. Christus demonstrates his trademark spatial mastery, rich jewel-toned drapery, and peaceful, intimate spiritual narrative.
