Saint Francis In Ecstasy (ca. 1577–1580) by El Greco – Hand-Painted Oil Painting Reproduction | Dafen Village Canvas Art

Painted shortly after his arrival in Toledo between 1577 and 1580, Saint Francis In Ecstasy (San Francisco en éxtasis) is one of El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) most famous depictions of the founder of the Franciscan Order.

The composition captures Saint Francis receiving the stigmata in a moment of intense spiritual communion. Dressed in a simple, coarse habit, Francis gazes upward at heavenly light breaking through dark, swirling storm clouds. Rendered in El Greco’s distinctive Manierist style, the masterpiece features elongated forms, dramatic contrasts of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), and expressive emotional resonance that became the hallmark of Counter-Reformation art.
