You know I am absolutely obsessed with finding hidden gems that mix art, lifestyle, and a little bit of chaos, right? Well, I just found the coolest spot in China that you need to add to your bucket list.

Forget the polished museums for a second. We are talking about Dafen Oil Painting Village in Shenzhen. 🇨🇳

I’m telling you, this isn’t your typical art district. It’s raw, it’s vibrant, and it is literally the world’s art factory. If you are looking for unique things to do in Shenzhen or want to know where to buy affordable oil paintings in China, keep reading because this place is a total vibe. 💖

Not Just a Gallery… It’s a Vibe 🖌️

Okay, so unlike the 798 Art Zone in Beijing (which is super cool but more about exhibition), Dafen is all about the business of art.

Imagine this: ten little streets packed with studios where people are actually painting everywhere. I saw this buyer counting through a literal mountain of oil paintings, stacking them up, and carrying them away in huge bundles! 🤯 It was wild.

It’s one of the best places for wholesale wall art sourcing, but even if you aren’t an interior designer, just walking around watching the artists work is mesmerizing. And yes, guys—these are 100% hand-painted original artworks, not cheap prints!

Get Your Hands Dirty (DIY Painting!) 🎨

This was the highlight of my day! Walking down the street, you see all these cute little easels set up right outside the shops. The shop owners here are so different from the north—they are super chatty, friendly, and actually want to talk to you about their style.

You can actually sit down and paint your own masterpiece! 👩‍🎨 It costs between 30 to 80 RMB (which is a steal!) depending on the size. They give you the canvas, the paints, and even a reference photo, or you can freestyle it. It is such a fun interactive art experience in Shenzhen for a date or just for content.

The Russian Connection 🇷🇺🖼️

You have to check out the big building at the village entrance. It’s this long corridor of galleries that feels a bit more upscale.

I noticed something super specific there—tons of Russian oil paintings. Even though the subjects are classic (flowers, landscapes), the technique is totally different from the Chinese style. The colors are heavier, deeper, and have this powerful, moody texture. If you love textured oil painting decor for a statement wall, this is where you find it. It’s giving major drama.

Chaotic but… Chic? ✨

Here is what surprised me: for a place that is basically a working village, it is surprisingly organized. The streets are narrow and busy, but the ground is clean (no trash!), and the management is on point. There are even designated photo spots (hello, Instagrammable spots in Shenzhen!) and it feels very safe and welcoming.

Why You Should Go

Dafen isn’t just a tourist trap; it’s a living, breathing community. Whether you want to buy custom oil paintings, try a workshop, or just soak in the creative energy, it is such a unique experience.
