Painted around 1480 by Hugo van der Goes (housed in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, Germany), the Small Deposition (Right Wing) forms the companion panel to the left wing showing the lowering of Christ’s body.
While the left panel focuses on Christ being taken down from the Cross, this poignant right panel depicts the sorrowful spectators: the Virgin Mary collapsing in grief, supported by Saint John the Evangelist and the mourning Holy Women. Van der Goes’ signature Northern Renaissance realism is on full display here through subtle facial anatomy, weeping expressions, deep blue and red drapery glazes, and a desolate landscape background that amplifies the scene’s spiritual gravity.
