Created between 1494 and 1516 by Hieronymus Bosch, The Stone Operation (La extracción de la piedra de la locura, housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain) is one of his most celebrated allegorical and satirical masterpieces of the Northern Renaissance.

The painting pokes fun at human gullibility and quack medical practices of the Middle Ages. A fraudulent doctor wearing an inverted funnel on his head performs a trepanning procedure to remove the “stone of madness” from a patient’s head. However, instead of a stone, he extracts a water lily (a symbol of lust and deceit), while a monk and a nun—wearing a book balanced on her head—look on. The middle Dutch inscription around the circular frame translates to: “Master, cut out the stone quickly, my name is Lubbert” (a common folkloric name for a fool).
