Prince Antoine d’Orléans (1824–1890), Duc de Montpensier, was a key figure of the French July Monarchy and later candidate for the Spanish throne. Commissioned in 1844 when the Prince was twenty years old, Franz Xaver Winterhalter depicts him as a dashing young officer in the French Army’s artillery branch. Preserved today in the Palace of Versailles, the work demonstrates Winterhalter’s mastery of Neoclassical balance and romantic atmosphere. Set against a stormy sky and distant landscape, the Duc stands in three-quarter length with an air of youthful confidence, his dark tailored uniform illuminated by gold bullion embroidery, military decorations, and a glowing sky.
