Franz Xaver Winterhalter / Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria in Field Marshal Uniform (1865) Neo-Rococo State Portrait – Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction by Dafen Village Studio

Painted in 1865, this state portrait stands as the definitive military likeness of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1830–1916) during the mid-19th-century height of the Austro-Hungarian imperial era. Created to hang alongside Winterhalter’s companion portrait of Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), the painting showcases Franz Joseph standing with commanding poise. He wears the distinctive white tunic and scarlet trousers of an Austrian Field Marshal, adorned with the sash and Great Star of the Military Order of Maria Theresa—Austria’s highest military honor—alongside the Order of the Golden Fleece. Set against a stately architectural terrace overlooking imperial grounds, Winterhalter blends Neo-Rococo elegance with strict military precision, balancing brilliant metallic gold work and crisp uniform cloth against dramatic atmospheric skies.
