Princess Victoria, Princess Royal (1840–1901), affectionately known to the British royal family as “Vicky,” was the eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (and later German Empress and Queen of Prussia as wife of Emperor Frederick III). Delighted by Winterhalter’s talent during his inaugural stay at Windsor Castle in 1842, Queen Victoria commissioned this intimate portrait of her infant daughter. Set against a soft sky and draped interior backdrop, Winterhalter applies his signature Neo-Rococo finesse to depict the young princess sitting peacefully, dressed in a traditional white christening gown adorned with fine lace and ribbons. Winterhalter captures a rare combination of royal stature and genuine infant innocence, making it one of the most endearing works in the Royal Collection.
