Created around 1857 as Alexandre Cabanel was rising to national acclaim in Second Empire France, Alexandre Cabanel’s Aglaida and Boniface illustrates a compelling scene from early Christian hagiography. The narrative recounts the wealthy Roman patrician woman Aglaida and her steward (and lover) Boniface, who transformed his life through martyrdom in Tarsus. Cabanel blends classical French Academic draughtsmanship with delicate emotional narrative, rendering soft flesh tones, luxurious Roman garments, and subtle shadow play. The original masterpiece is preserved in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.
Recreated by senior history and figure painting specialists at Dafen Village Oil Painting Studio, this reproduction is executed strictly by hand on heavy-duty linen canvas. We never employ digital printing, canvas overlays, or mechanical shortcuts. Utilizing classical academic techniques—including charcoal underdrawing, precise figure modeling, and multi-pass oil glazing—our artists faithfully capture the serene emotional resonance, rich drapery textures, and harmonious color balance of Cabanel’s original composition.
