Exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1870, Alexandre Cabanel’s Death of Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta illustrates one of the most famous literary tragedies in Western history, immortalized in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. Caught in an embrace by Francesca’s vengeful husband, Gianciotto Malatesta, the two ill-fated lovers lie slain on the floor while Gianciotto retreats into the shadowy doorway in the background. Cabanel orchestrates a masterclass in theatrical atmosphere, balancing rigid architectural lines with foreshortened, lifeless figures wrapped in rich crimson and pale garments.
Recreated by senior history and narrative painting specialists at Dafen Village Oil Painting Studio, this reproduction is executed strictly by hand on heavy-duty linen canvas. We never employ digital printing, canvas overlays, or mechanical shortcuts. Utilizing classical academic techniques—including charcoal underdrawing, precise anatomical foreshortening, and multi-pass oil glazing—our artists faithfully capture the dramatic chiaroscuro, velvet shadows, and tragic romance of Cabanel’s original grand canvas.
