Juan Gris – Fantômas (Pipe and Newspaper) (1915) Synthetic Cubism – Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction by Dafen Village Studio

Created in 1915, Fantômas (Pipe and Newspaper) is one of Juan Gris’s most famous Cubist compositions, referencing the popular French crime fiction anti-hero Fantômas. In this still life, Gris arranges everyday café items—a clay pipe, a folded newspaper, a wine glass, and a wooden table—into a brilliantly calculated architecture of overlapping diagonal planes. Combining vibrant cobalt blue, warm ochre, crisp white, and subtle faux-wood grain textures, Gris achieves a striking balance between mystery, abstraction, and classical structure. Recreating this artwork requires meticulous brush precision to faithfully capture the geometric clarity and harmonious color balance of the original.
