Painted in 1913, Saint Matorel is an exquisite Synthetic Cubist still life by Juan Gris, paying homage to the celebrated prose poem by his friend, the French poet and writer Max Jacob. In this composition, Gris arranges a tabletop scene featuring the open pages and binding of a book alongside café items, breaking them down into intersecting diagonal planes, crisp typographical hints, and woodgrain textures. The palette harmonizes rich burnt umbers, warm ochres, deep charcoal tones, and soft cool grays. Recreating this work requires precise line work and subtle gradient transitions to capture both the literary spirit and architectural discipline of Gris’s early Synthetic period.
