Painted in 1890, Woman by a lamp is a captivating example of Paul Signac’s mastery in rendering artificial light through Neo-Impressionist optical theory. Depicting a figure bathed in the soft, warm radiance of an oil lamp, Signac meticulously applied tiny dots of contrasting warm and cool pigments to convey light’s atmospheric diffusion. Originally painted on a compact wooden panel, this work captures a serene moment of nocturnal domesticity, balancing scientific color precision with deep poetic mood.
