Pieter Claesz – Tobacco Pipes and a Brazier (1636) Baroque – Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction by Dafen Village Studio

Painted in 1636, Tobacco Pipes and a Brazier is a quintessential example of Pieter Claesz’s specialized tobacconist (Toebackje) still lifes, popular during the peak of the Dutch Golden Age. Tobacco, a novel and luxurious indulgence imported from the Americas in the 17th century, was frequently painted alongside clay pipes, braziers, and spill-bowls. Claesz combines the tactile realism of smooth white clay pipes, glowing red coals, and metallic vessel sheen with subtle vanitas undertones, reminding the viewer of fleeting pleasure and transient moments like rising smoke.
