Painted between 1912 and 1913, The Cardiff Team (L’Équipe de Cardiff) stands as one of Robert Delaunay’s most celebratory and popular Orphic achievements. Inspired by a high-stakes rugby match between Paris and Cardiff, Delaunay combined modern athleticism with the monumental symbols of early 20th-century progress: the Eiffel Tower, the Paris Ferris wheel, aviation biplanes, and colorful street billboards (featuring text like “Astra” and “Magic-Paris”). By merging human motion with urban dynamism in a dazzling array of primary colors and optical contrast, Delaunay captured the optimistic thrill of the modern age.
